ANOTHER CRAZY THING I WANT TO TRY

Zorbing is not the only potentially hazardous sport that gets my adrenalin going. Kite surfiing also has a pretty powerful pull. And I do mean “pull.” I’m told that this is pretty punishing on the neck and shoulders, but dammit! I’d still like to try!

We were coming home on Friday, with a week’s groceries in the car when I saw several kites, above the treeline. So I commanded my chauffeur to ” take a left and drive to the beach, Jeeves.” He did.

Being late in the afternoon and overcast I was pushing uphill to get good shots, but I managed       one or two.

I should, perhaps, mention that the lads who fly these kites are probably in their twenties, strapping hunks and, obviously, fit. Not feeble old ladies…

Well, this feeble old lady would still like to have a crack at it. One day…

A nicely chilled Chardonnay calls to me…

  1. Sorry, but the pictures didn’t upload here on my computer. I think I would love to do that also. Parasailing behind a speedboat would be another thing I would like to do. Also would enjoy jumping off a cliff with a kite on me.

  4. Me, too!

That said, I’m totally intrigued now. I love kites, actually dream about them, even wrote a book! (And I just finished reading The Kite Runner, if that counts) so surfing with them — wow. I’m in.

  5. OK, guys…I’ve reloaded the pics. Don’t know what was happening there, but the lovely super=fast uploader seems to have deserted me (:
And yes, it looks like a ton of fun!

  6. It is very appealing. My man started a few years back before moving to landboarding, then buggying. I haven’t progressed past learning the kite yet myself – too many distractions.

Next time you’re over perhaps we can oblige you with a lesson or two – my little lady has a nice petite powerfoil that is a breeze to fly, and won’t carry you away ;).

denise…it’s a deal! I guess you go out to Bethells or Piha, yes? And if Little Miss can do it so can Ms 63 and a bit!

  11. You are braver than me.. The older I get, the more heights and motion get to me. I used to adore rollercoasters and related experiences – no longer! I no longer find that kind of anxiety or adrenaline rush appealing. That certainly makes me sound and feel like a fuddy-duddy – but I blame it on my aging inner-ears!

  12. tara…oh, I’m terrible with heights! Can’t even stand on a chair to change a light bulb! But kiting is different. (I think!)

  14. ziggi…well, yes, of course. Zipping along attacjhed to a kite is not much different from a broomsti – oh! you mean the strapping young lads? Toy Boys! bring ’em on!

  17. I went up in a hot air balloon once and never again. I can’t get over the idea of nylon and air holding me up. The physics of it seem wrong. You’re a brave woman.
