INTERNATIONAL PRINT DAY

Tomorrow, millions of mothers will be swamped with chrysanthemums.

Why should printmakers not have ‘ a special day’?  Oh, they do?

Why, yes! The first Saturday in May is International Print Day. http://printdayinmay.wordpress.com/2011/04/14/its-just-about-time-for-our-annual-print-day-in-may

I had such good intentions of cutting new plates and printing…sigh

Other “pressing” issues intervened. But I was determined to print something! So I hauled out some older plates. Hey! Never let it be said that I’m not willing!

This(below) is a baren, a traditional Japanese implement, wrapped in a skin of bamboo leaves, used in hand printing. (The wrinkly old hand is not Japanese.)

Yes, I hand-pulled my prints today, which means I cannot show you any intaglio-printed pieces, or even heavy collographs as these require the use of a press.

These are what I did manage. Inked plates, after I’d pulled the prints.

The prints are drying on the rack; tomorrow (my time, this side of the IDL; it will still be May 7 elsewhere) I’ll post pics of the prints.

And I’ve lit votive candles to appease the spirits that got in the way of my posting new work!

Y’all come back now, y’hear!*

* I guess that will not resonate with anyone under 55!

EDITED TO ADD PHOTOS.

                                                                 Interesting marks when cleaning up….

….turned to this orientation……

The Man said it looks like a panda!

For this I over-printed a monotype of ferns with a sliced-up collograph plate of a nude. The ink looks very “spacey” and I think it’s probably due to some sticky residue on the collograph  plate. I was lazy and didn’t bother to go downstairs in the rain to fetch some turpentine and clean it thoroughly! In my defence, can I say that NORMALLY when I set up to print I have everything to hand.

This will be familiar to some readers! It’s dear old Nelson, an owl who lived with us following a a serious run-in with a windscreen. As he was unable to be released, I was allowed to keep him on a permit and he became part of an educational programme. The plate is a linoprint.

                                               Another linoprint. A non-specific fish!

And that is all for now. Maybe , next year, I’ll be better organised. Maybe.;-)

  1. I’m 55 and recognise the catchphrase, but can’t remember whose it is. I am constantly confused in daily life when someone I am speaking to makes some oblique reference to an item I know nothing of, then I realise – they are talking about something that is on TV. I can’t remember the last time I owned a TV. The prints look interesting, but gt will be 12 hours before I can see them on my laptop using the free Wi-Fi in the pub. Phone internet is pretty hopeless for images.

    • Oh! It’s you! Or you dressed as me? 😉 Welcome aboard.
That reference is to an old 60s show called “Beverley Hill-billies” Back then, it was difficult to escape the theme song! I am similarly confused when young ‘uns talk about TV today as I rarely watch it.
I’ll update this post later with the photos.

  2. Yes, I’m over 55 and grew up with The Beverly Hillbillies. But it is also a common catchphrase here in North Carolina, especially up in the mountains.

I do have a TV, but no cable and rarely watch anything outside of local news and PBS (Public Broadcasting System). According to the Republican party who is trying to defund PBS, that makes me a white-wine-swilling, Volvo-driving, godless liberal, except I’m a teetotaler, Mitsubishi-minivan-driving, church-going liberal. Which is why I don’t watch cable TV (if you can understand the circular logic there).

  3. Prints. Every time I hear that word I remember an ad for a printing company: Some day, your prints will come your way.

Oh, and I think of William Blake’s book, Songs of Innocence, a delightful book.

Prints fascinated me though I don’t know how to do any.

  4. I’m afraid I don’t have TV, and never watched it even when I did…I am however, under 55 so it’s possible I missed it in general. Oh well.

I will come back, even if I don’t get the catch phrase. ^^

    • You’re not intruding, Rog. I saw the link at Scarlet’s place, then yours and will do something about it this afternoon. Thanks for the thought. (I bet Kaz would have had something pithy to say! 😉 )

Power to your pedal, my son!
